Sora vs Veo: Sora shut down in 2026. Use instead: Veo in Gemini and Flow, Kling, or Runway.

Short answer: in October 2026 there is no real choice between Sora and Veo, because Sora no longer exists. OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on 26 April 2026 and the Sora API on 24 September 2026, and it names no replacement. Google's video generation is still available: in the Gemini app and Flow on Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra. For developers, Google's own deprecation table now points from the Veo 3.1 preview models to Gemini Omni (gemini-omni-1.1-flash). If you were choosing between the two, choose Google, or one of the alternatives below.

"Sora vs Veo" is still searched about 3,400 times a month in the US (DataForSEO, October 2026), and many of the comparisons that answer it still treat Sora as if it were on sale. TheToolsVerse checked both companies' own pages on 24 October 2026, and asked five AI assistants the same question to see who has caught up.

If you used Sora

OpenAI's help centre says you can still export what you made at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset. After any final export window, OpenAI "will permanently delete any data associated with your use of Sora", so export now. Any purchased ChatGPT/Sora credits "can still be used for Codex", and refunds go through ChatGPT's normal subscription refund process.

Where Veo stands in October 2026

Veo is not gone, but Google is moving its developer customers on to something new.

In Google's apps. Google's subscription page lists video generation on Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra, through Flow, Google's AI filmmaking tool:

PlanFlow credits listedPrice we were shown (India)
FreeFlow access with limited Nano Banana Pro (images); no video generation listed₹0
Google AI Plus200 Flow credits₹399 a month
Google AI Pro1,000 Flow credits, plus "a limited trial of Veo 3.1 Lite" in its FAQ₹1,950 a month
Google AI Ultra10,000 or 25,000 Flow creditsfrom ₹6,500 a month

Google shows prices by country, and our page loaded the Indian version, so check yours on gemini.google. The plan descriptions name Gemini Omni Flash in Flow. The page gives no daily video limits.

In the Gemini API. Google's changelog and deprecation table tell the developer story:

  • 13 January 2026: Veo gained 4K output.
  • 31 March 2026: veo-3.1-lite-generate-preview launched as "our most cost-efficient video generation model".
  • 30 June 2026: Veo 2.0 and 3.0 reached their shutdown date. The same day, Gemini Omni launched in preview: "a high-performance multimodal model designed for high-speed video generation".
  • 27 August 2026: Gemini Omni reached general availability as gemini-omni-1.1-flash, with video extension, first-and-last-frame interpolation and output from 360p to 4K.
  • 22 October 2026: the Veo 3.1 preview models (veo-3.1-generate-preview, -fast- and -lite-) reached their listed shutdown date. The replacement Google names for all three is gemini-omni-1.1-flash. Google calls these "the earliest possible shutdown dates".

For business customers, Google's notes also point to the Veo general-availability models on its Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.

What five AI assistants say (TheToolsVerse panel, 24 October 2026)

We asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Claude "Sora vs Veo, which is better?" and "Should I use Sora or Veo for AI video?" from a US location. That made 10 answers.

FindingAnswers
Said Sora has been discontinued, or that its availability is in doubt5 of 10 (ChatGPT 2, Perplexity 2, Claude 1)
Compared Sora as if you could still use it5 of 10
...of which came from Google's own Gemini and AI Mode4 of 4 of their answers
Mentioned Gemini Omni, Veo's replacement in Google's API2 of 10 (both ChatGPT)

Half the answers still weigh Sora's storytelling against Veo's realism, as if both were on sale. Google's own two assistants did that every time. ChatGPT, which cited OpenAI's help centre, was the only engine to report both changes.

Method: ChatGPT and Gemini were read through their web interfaces, Google AI Mode from its live results, and Perplexity (sonar) and Claude (with web search) through their APIs. Answers vary between runs, so treat this as a snapshot of 24 October 2026.

What to use instead of Sora

If you want Google's video tools: a Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra plan gives you video generation in Flow; Pro adds a limited Veo 3.1 Lite trial. Developers building on the Gemini API should move to gemini-omni-1.1-flash, which Google names as the replacement for every Veo 3.1 preview model.

If you want an alternative to both, these video generators are on TheToolsVerse, with plans and free tiers on each listing:

  • Kling: known for motion that holds together, with a free tier. Our video generator guide calls it the closest starting point for former Sora users.
  • Runway: AI video generation and editing in one product.
  • Luma Dream Machine: Luma AI's text-to-video and image-to-video generator.
  • PixVerse: text-to-video and image-to-video clips.
  • Vidu: text-to-video with multiple characters in one scene. Vidu is a TheToolsVerse partner.

Before you pay for any of them

AI video changes monthly: two of the products in this comparison were shut down or replaced in the last six months. Make the same 5-second clip on two free tiers before paying, and check the plan page on the day you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sora shut down?

Yes. OpenAI's help centre says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on 26 April 2026 and the Sora API on 24 September 2026. OpenAI's API deprecations page lists no replacement.

Can I still download my Sora videos?

OpenAI says you can export your Sora content at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset and will get an email when it is ready. After any final export window, your Sora data will be permanently deleted.

What happened to my Sora credits?

OpenAI says purchased ChatGPT/Sora credits can still be used for Codex. For refunds, it points to its standard ChatGPT subscription refund process.

Is Google Veo still available?

Yes, in Google's apps: the subscription page lists video generation through Flow on Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra, with a limited Veo 3.1 Lite trial mentioned for Pro. In the Gemini API, the Veo 3.1 preview models reached their listed shutdown date on 22 October 2026, and Google names Gemini Omni as their replacement.

What is Gemini Omni?

Google's newer video model, launched in preview on 30 June 2026 and made generally available on 27 August 2026 as gemini-omni-1.1-flash. It supports video generation and conversational editing, video extension and first-and-last-frame interpolation, at 360p to 4K.

Which is better, Sora or Veo?

Whatever their strengths were, only one of them is still on sale. Sora is discontinued, so for new projects the choice is Google's tools (Flow, Veo 3.1 Lite or Gemini Omni) or another video generator such as Kling, Runway or Luma.

Final verdict

"Sora vs Veo" was one of the great AI comparisons of 2025. In October 2026 it has a one-line answer: Sora is gone; use Google's video tools or an alternative. The interesting change is on Google's side: for developers, Veo 3.1's previews have handed over to Gemini Omni, and most comparisons, including half the AI answers we collected, have not noticed yet.
