DataForSEO vs Semrush vs Ahrefs: What Real SEO Jobs Cost on Each (With Our Own Invoices)

Disclosure
TheToolsVerse is an affiliate partner of DataForSEO and of Semrush: if you sign up through links on this page we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. DataForSEO added $30 of testing credits to our account in October 2026; we pay for the rest of our usage ourselves. We have no relationship with Ahrefs. Every DataForSEO cost below was measured on our own account; Semrush and Ahrefs figures are their published prices and limits, not tests of paid accounts.
Short answer: they are not three versions of the same product. DataForSEO sells raw SEO data by the request — you pay a fraction of a cent per results page or per keyword, and you build whatever you need on top. Semrush and Ahrefs sell finished tools by the month — dashboards, rank trackers, backlink explorers and site audits ready to use, with an API as an extra. If you write code or run research in bursts, DataForSEO is dramatically cheaper. If you want to log in and work without building anything, the subscriptions are the product.
The rest of this page puts numbers on that, starting with our own bills.
What our week of research actually cost
TheToolsVerse publishes original studies on AI search and AI tools, and all the search data behind them comes from DataForSEO's API. This week we ran 14 studies. The DataForSEO balance went from $6.25 to $2.00 — $4.25 for the data behind all fourteen.
| Job | DataForSEO endpoint | What it cost us |
|---|---|---|
| Google US search volume for 613 brand keywords, in one request | Labs · keyword overview | $0.074 |
| One day of rank tracking: Google top 10 for 100 keywords | SERP API · Google organic, standard queue | $0.06 ($0.0006 each; all 100 ready within 1.4 minutes) |
| 120 live Google results pages, top 10 plus AI Overview detection | SERP API · Google organic, live | $0.24 ($0.002 each) |
| Six months of estimated organic traffic for 30 domains | Labs · historical rank overview | $3.82 ($0.127 each) |
| 440 answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Claude | AI Optimization API + AI Mode SERP | $2.69 (full write-up) |
Two things stand out. The cheap things are very cheap: a Google results page costs a fifth of a cent, and keyword volume is closer to a hundredth of a cent per keyword. The expensive thing — historical traffic estimates — is still under 13 cents per domain. And nothing is a subscription: the $50 minimum top-up never expires, so a project that needs data twice a year pays twice a year.
The three pricing models side by side
| DataForSEO | Semrush | Ahrefs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model | Pay per request, no subscription | Monthly plan | Monthly plan |
| Entry price | $50 top-up, funds don't expire; $1 trial credit | SEO plan $139/month (Starter $199, Pro+ $299) | Starter $29/month; Lite $129 (Standard $249, Advanced $449) |
| Free option | $1 trial credit | Free plan, 10 reports a day; 7-day Semrush One trial | Free tier |
| API | The whole product is the API | Top tier only; API units bought separately, unit prices not published | Lite and above; 200,000 units a month on Lite, 50-unit minimum per request |
| Interface | Developer dashboard and playground; no SEO workspace | Full SEO and AI visibility workspace | Full SEO workspace |
| Best at | Bulk, programmatic, irregular data needs | All-in-one marketing workflows | Backlinks and content research |
Prices on monthly billing, read on each company's pricing page on 29 October 2026; annual billing is cheaper on both subscriptions.
DataForSEO
The SERP API's published rates are $0.0006 per results page in the standard queue, $0.0012 in the priority queue and $0.002 live — a page being up to ten organic results, with deeper pages billed per extra ten. Our 120 live pages cost exactly the published $0.002 each. Labs data (keyword metrics, domain metrics, historical rankings) is billed per task plus per item returned, which is why 613 keywords in one task cost less than eight cents.
What you do not get is software. There is no rank-tracking dashboard, no site-audit report, no keyword workspace — you get JSON, and you (or a tool you build, or an AI agent you connect) turn it into answers. For developers that is the point; for a marketer who has never called an API, it is a wall.
Semrush
Semrush's plans are built for people who want to work in the product. The SEO plan ($139 a month) includes tracking 500 keywords daily across 5 websites; Starter and Pro+ add AI visibility features such as daily prompt tracking. The free plan allows 10 reports a day, which is enough to try the tools, not to run research.
For programmatic use it is the most expensive of the three to reach. Semrush's developer documentation says standard API access needs a Business subscription — the current pricing page lists API integration on its custom-priced Advanced plan — and API units are bought separately, in packages whose prices are shown only inside the account. The one example the docs give: a domain's organic keywords report costs 10 units for live data and 50 for historical.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs is the subscription that comes closest to DataForSEO for developers: API access is included from Lite ($129 a month), with 200,000 API units a month — 800,000 on Standard, 2,000,000 on Advanced — and a minimum of 50 units per request, so Lite allows at most 4,000 requests a month before anything else is counted. Units are shared between the API, Ahrefs' MCP server and Ahrefs Connect. The $29 Starter plan is a way in to the tools, not to the API.
Six common jobs: which one fits
| Job | Cheapest sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Check volume for a list of keywords | DataForSEO | 613 keywords cost us $0.074 in one call |
| Track 100 keywords daily | Semrush or Ahrefs if you want a dashboard; DataForSEO if you'll build one | We ran one day of it: $0.06 in the standard queue, so about $1.80 a month. Included in Semrush's SEO plan (500 keywords) and Ahrefs Lite (750) |
| Snapshot who ranks for a topic | DataForSEO | 120 full result pages with AI Overview detection cost $0.24 |
| Explore a competitor's backlinks by hand | Ahrefs | A backlink index and interface built for exactly this; DataForSEO's backlink data needs code |
| Run an all-in-one marketing workflow | Semrush | Keyword, rank, audit, content and AI visibility tools in one workspace |
| Track AI answers across engines | DataForSEO for raw answers; Semrush for a ready dashboard | 440 answers cost $2.69 via the API; Semrush's AI visibility tools track prompts in a UI |
The pattern is consistent. When you know exactly what data you need, DataForSEO is cheaper by one or two orders of magnitude. When you need software to tell you what to look at, the subscriptions earn their price.
Who should pick which
- Developers, data teams and anyone building an SEO feature into a product: DataForSEO. You will pay for what you call and nothing else.
- Founders and two-person teams doing research in bursts: DataForSEO, if someone can run a script — or connect it to an AI assistant through its MCP server, which is how we run ours.
- Marketers who want one place to work every day: Semrush, especially if AI visibility tracking is part of the job. Try Semrush One free for 7 days to see whether the workspace is worth it to you.
- Link builders and content researchers: Ahrefs, whose backlink and content tools are its centre of gravity, with an API included from Lite.
Plenty of teams use two: a subscription for the daily workspace, and DataForSEO for the bulk or custom jobs the subscription's limits make expensive.
How we run DataForSEO for a few dollars a week
The habits that keep our bills small:
- Use the standard queue when you can wait. It is 70% cheaper than live mode ($0.0006 vs $0.002 per page), and the wait is short: our 100 rank checks were all ready within a minute and a half.
- Batch keywords into one Labs task. Pricing per task plus per item makes one 613-keyword request far cheaper than 613 small ones.
- Read the
costfield on every response. Each task reports what it cost; log it and you always know your spend per study. - Test on the $1 trial credit first. It covers hundreds of results pages.
Create a DataForSEO account — new accounts get a $1 trial credit, and the minimum top-up after that is $50, with no expiry.

Pay-as-you-go SEO data — SERPs from $0.0006 per page, keyword data by the item, AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude — with no subscription and funds that never expire.
Create a DataForSEO accountMethod and sources
- DataForSEO costs: measured on our own account — each task's reported
costfield, or the account balance read before and after a run (/v3/appendix/user_data), 24–29 October 2026. The 14-study figure is the balance change across the runs for those studies. - Published prices and limits: each company's own pages, read on 29 October 2026 — DataForSEO's pricing and Google Organic SERP pricing pages; Semrush's prices page and developer documentation ("API access"); Ahrefs' pricing page and its help-centre article "About API v3" (dated 23 September 2026). Monthly billing unless stated.
- Not tested: we do not hold paid Semrush or Ahrefs subscriptions, so their columns compare published plans, not measured performance. We did not compare data accuracy between the three; that needs paid access to all of them and is a different study.
