Later Alternatives

Later is the best visual planner for Instagram and one of the weakest tools here for everything else. Seven alternatives compared for the three reasons people leave: they need a free plan, they need an inbox, or their channels stopped being Instagram-first.

7 tools compared · Last reviewed

Later earned its place as the Instagram planner: a drag-and-drop grid preview, a link-in-bio page, hashtag suggestions and best-time recommendations, priced per social set. Its pricing page on 14 September 2026 listed Starter at $18.75 per month, Growth at $37.50 and Scale at $82.50, all billed yearly, with the page stating that yearly billing is 25% off monthly.

People leave for three reasons. The first is that Later has no free plan and only a 14-day trial, while Buffer and Metricool are free at the entry level. The second is that Later's inbox and listening are thin, so the moment social becomes customer conversation you need a different tool. The third is channel mix: a brand whose growth moved to LinkedIn, YouTube or Bluesky finds Later's Instagram-shaped workflow gets in the way.

Every price below was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 14 September 2026 and carries its billing term. Later's own monthly-billing rates were not readable in its HTML, which is why only its annual figures appear; we would rather leave a gap than estimate.

Why people look for a Later alternative

No free plan

Later's 14-day trial is the only free access. Buffer is free for three channels indefinitely, Metricool for one brand, Planable for 50 posts, and Postiz if you host it yourself. For a creator posting to two accounts, that is the entire comparison.

Thin inbox and listening

Later can show comments but is not built for working a queue of DMs and mentions with assignment and rules. Vista Social, Sprout Social and Metricool all treat the inbox as core; Later treats it as a tab.

Instagram-shaped workflow

The visual grid is the product, and it is superb for Instagram. For a B2B brand on LinkedIn, a developer on Bluesky, or a publisher on YouTube and Threads, that grid is dead weight and the network support is narrower than Buffer's or Postiz's.

Per-set pricing with per-user add-ons

Later prices by social set and charges extra for users ($3.75) and sets ($11.25) beyond the plan. Buffer's per-channel and Metricool's per-brand models are simpler to predict, and Planable's per-workspace model suits agencies better.

How we chose

We added the tools people move to from Later — Buffer, Metricool, Planable, SocialBee, Sprout Social and Postiz — to our directory, alongside Vista Social which was already listed, then opened each vendor's own pricing page on 14 September 2026 and read the figures from the HTML. Prices are quoted with billing terms; where a page did not publish a figure in readable form the entry says so. Publer and SocialPilot published no readable prices and are not ranked. Promotional discounts seen that day are not quoted.

The 7 alternatives, compared

1.Buffer

freemium

Best for: Creators and small brands who want a free plan and more networks

The default move. Buffer is free for three channels and was listed at $5 per channel per month for Essentials and $10 for Team on 14 September 2026, schedules to more networks than Later including Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon, and has a cleaner calendar. It lacks Later's grid preview and link-in-bio page, which is the only thing an Instagram-first creator gives up.

Free tier: Yes — 3 channels, no time limit.

Watch out: No inbox and no listening, so it does not fix the second reason people leave Later. Per-channel pricing adds up past about eight channels.

2.Metricool

freemium

Best for: Brands and freelancers who need analytics and an inbox at Later's price

The analytics upgrade. Metricool covers scheduling, a unified inbox, competitor benchmarking and organic-plus-paid reporting, priced per brand: Starter at $20 per month on annual billing ($25 monthly) for up to five brands, Advanced from $53 ($67 monthly) for fifteen, as listed on 14 September 2026. Its free plan handles one brand properly, which Later has no answer to.

Free tier: Yes — 1 brand with 30 days of analytics.

Watch out: Utilitarian interface with no visual grid preview. X/Twitter was a $10 per month add-on per account.

3.Planable

freemium

Best for: Teams and agencies who need client approval before anything publishes

Later's approvals are basic; Planable's are the product. Pixel-accurate previews, client comment threads, suggested edits and multi-level sign-off, priced per workspace at $33 for Basic and $49 for Pro per month on monthly billing, two months free yearly, as listed on 14 September 2026. The 50-post free trial has no time limit.

Free tier: Yes — the first 50 created posts, no time limit.

Watch out: Analytics ($14), inbox ($9) and listening ($99) are paid add-ons per workspace per month. No link-in-bio tool.

4.SocialBee

free-trial

Best for: Solo marketers who want evergreen content recycled automatically

A different model from Later's calendar: categories of content post on their own schedules and evergreen items re-queue, so a queue filled once keeps posting for months. It includes an AI writer, a light inbox and analytics, and was listed at $29, $49 and $99 per month billed monthly ($290, $490 and $990 a year) on 14 September 2026.

Free tier: No; a 14-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Watch out: No free plan and no visual grid. Entry price is above Later's Starter on annual billing.

5.Vista Social

free-trial

Best for: Agencies that need inbox, listening, reviews and white-label reporting

The full agency suite Later is not: DM automation, review management, listening and white-label reports, priced per account rather than per user. Professional was listed at $79 per month billed monthly or $758 a year with 15 profiles, Advanced at $149 or $1,430 with 30, and Scale at $349 or $3,638 with 70 on 14 September 2026.

Free tier: No; a 14-day trial without a card.

Watch out: Listening beyond your own profiles was a $75 per month add-on and X (Twitter) $29 per month. Considerably more than Later for a single brand that only schedules.

6.Sprout Social

free-trial

Best for: Brands where social is a customer-service channel

The premium answer to Later's thin inbox. Sprout's Smart Inbox with case management, listening and reporting are the best in the category, and its pricing page on 14 September 2026 listed Essentials at $79 per seat per month on annual billing ($99 monthly), with Standard at $199, Professional at $299 and Advanced at $399 per seat.

Free tier: No; a 30-day trial with no card.

Watch out: Per-seat pricing that is five to twenty times Later's. Buy it for the inbox, not for scheduling.

7.Postiz

free-trial

Best for: Developers and creators whose channels are Bluesky, Mastodon, Dev.to or Medium

For the channel-mix reason. Postiz publishes to the mainstream networks plus Bluesky, Mastodon, Nostr, Dev.to, Hashnode, Medium and WordPress, offers an API, MCP server and n8n nodes, and is free to self-host. Hosted plans were listed at $29 (5 channels), $39 (10), $49 (30) and $99 (100) per month with unlimited posts on 14 September 2026.

Free tier: Self-hosting is free (open source); the hosted version has a 7-day trial.

Watch out: No visual grid, no inbox, basic analytics. It is the opposite of Later in almost every way, which is the point for the people who need it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Later alternative?

Yes. Buffer is free for three channels indefinitely, Metricool is free for one brand, Planable gives 50 free posts with no time limit, and Postiz is free to self-host. Later itself has no free plan; only a 14-day trial.

What is the cheapest Later alternative?

Buffer at $5 per channel per month for a small creator, or Metricool's Starter at $20 per month on annual billing for up to five brands. Later's Starter was $18.75 per month billed yearly on 14 September 2026, so for a single Instagram account Later is already competitive; the savings appear when you need more channels or brands.

Which alternative keeps the visual Instagram preview?

None of these seven match Later's grid planner. Planable previews each post exactly as it will appear, which is the closest, and Buffer shows a basic preview. If the grid is the reason you chose Later, staying is reasonable; leave for the inbox, the free plan or the channel mix.

Which has a link-in-bio tool?

Later's Linkin.bio is the strongest here. Buffer offers a Start Page and Vista Social a Vista Page; Metricool has a SmartLinks page. Planable, SocialBee, Sprout and Postiz do not bundle one.

What does Later cost?

Starter $18.75, Growth $37.50 and Scale $82.50 per month billed yearly, with extra social sets at $11.25 and extra users at $3.75 per month, as listed on 14 September 2026. The page states yearly billing is 25% off, so monthly billing is higher; those monthly figures were not readable in the HTML.

Will my Later content move over?

Media in Later's library can be downloaded and re-uploaded, and social accounts reconnect through each network in minutes, but scheduled posts do not transfer between tools. Let the queue finish or rebuild it, and export any analytics before the subscription ends.
