Editor verification notes

  • Read from the logged-out public plans page in USD; regional pricing and promotional offers may differ.
  • This is a read of the vendor's own pricing page, not a first-party account test. We have not verified the 100-prompt cap by exhausting it.

Checked by the TheToolsVerse Verification Deskby reading the vendor's own published pages, not by testing the product in an account. Grammarly can change prices at any time without notice. Editor's Verdict

Official Review
Grammarly is the default AI writing assistant for most people who write in a browser — grammar and spelling correction, tone detection, and full-sentence rewriting across Docs, Gmail, Slack and Word. The free tier is genuinely usable for correctness, but the features people most associate with the brand are not in it: tone adjustment, full-sentence rewrites, plagiarism detection and AI-text detection are all Pro. Free also caps generative AI at 100 prompts a month against Pro's 2,000 per member. Best for anyone who writes constantly inside other apps and wants correction everywhere; a poor fit for long-form drafting, where a dedicated writing tool does more per dollar.

Pros

What we like

  • Works inside the apps you already write in — browser extension, Word, Google Docs, Gmail and Slack rather than a separate editor
  • The free tier is genuinely useful on its own for spelling, grammar and tone detection, with no card required
  • Tone detection flags how a message will land before you send it, which is the feature most users keep it for
  • Pro's 2,000 AI prompts per member per month is a high ceiling for everyday rewriting and drafting

Cons

Limitations

  • The headline features are paywalled — tone adjustment, full-sentence rewrites, plagiarism and AI detection are all Pro-only
  • Free generative AI is capped at 100 prompts a month, which a single afternoon of drafting can exhaust
  • Weaker at long-form generation than dedicated drafting tools; it is a corrector first and a writer second
  • No annual price is published on the plans page, so the only public figure is the $12/month Pro rate

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grammarly actually free?
Yes, there is a real free plan at $0 with no card required — it covers spelling and grammar correction and tone detection, plus 100 generative AI prompts a month. But the features most people associate with Grammarly are not in it: tone adjustment, full-sentence rewrites, plagiarism detection and AI-text detection are all Pro-only.
How many AI prompts does the free Grammarly plan include?
100 per month. Pro raises this to 2,000 prompts per member per month — a 20x difference, and the main reason heavy users upgrade.
How much does Grammarly Pro cost?
$12 per month. Grammarly does not publish an annual price on its plans page, so $12/month is the only public figure (checked 19 August 2026). Enterprise is custom-priced.
Does the free plan check plagiarism?
No. Plagiarism detection and AI-text detection are both Pro features. The free plan is limited to correctness and tone detection.
