To answer it, we did something no aggregator directory does: a human editor (me) audited the pricing of 798 AI tools in the TheToolsVerse directory — reading each pricing page, testing free tiers, and classifying every tool by what you actually get without paying. Every tool in the TheToolsVerse directory gets a manual pricing review before listing: I read the vendor's pricing page, create an account where one is needed, and record what the free tier actually delivers — quotas, card requirements, watermarks, and locked features. Classifications used in this study:
- Free — real, usable output at no cost, forever or via a renewing quota. No card at signup.
- Freemium — a free tier exists but the core value sits behind payment (locked main feature, watermarked exports, or hard caps designed as a demo).

- 38 tools market a time-boxed trial (7/14/30 days) prominently as "free"
- 27 tools watermark or restrict the output on their free plan — you can make things, but not use them
- 15 tools state a credit-card requirement in their own pricing terms just to access the "free" offering
