Descript is the text-based editor that others copy, and its pricing page on 14 September 2026 listed Free with limited hours and watermarked 720p exports, Hobbyist at $16 a person a month billed annually or $24 monthly, Creator at $24 or $35, and Business at $50 or $65, with Enterprise custom. People look elsewhere for three reasons: the recording side is weaker than dedicated studios, per-person pricing adds up for teams that only need subtitles, and some jobs (cleanup, demo videos, generated audio) are better done by a specialist.
The alternatives split by what you were using Descript for. Riverside records better. Kapwing and VEED are browser editors for teams. Alitu is the beginner's podcast maker with hosting. Auphonic cleans and masters by the hour. Clueso makes product demos. Wondercraft generates from a script. Captions is the phone editor.
Every price here was read from the vendor's page on 14 September 2026. VEED and Auphonic render prices client-side and were read through a rendering fetch. Vendors whose pages could not be read are named below rather than guessed at.
Descript records, but Riverside records each guest locally in separate tracks up to 4K with progressive upload, which is why many podcasters record there and edit elsewhere.
Per-person pricing for a subtitle job
A social team that only needs captions and resizing pays Descript per seat. Kapwing is $16 a member on annual billing with the best subtitle tools here, and Captions has a free tier for captions.
Cleanup is a service, not a feature
Studio Sound is convenient; Auphonic does levelling, noise reduction and loudness targets more thoroughly for $13 a month for nine hours, with two free hours to test.
Some videos should be generated
Product demos and script-based audio do not need a timeline. Clueso produces demo videos from raw recordings and Wondercraft produces audio and video from text.
How we chose
We added Riverside, Kapwing, Alitu, Wondercraft, Clueso, Auphonic and Captions to our directory, all with readable prices, and re-priced VEED, which was already listed, from a rendered read the same day. We then read every vendor's pricing page on 14 September 2026. Vendors we checked and could not price honestly are left out: Podcastle rendered only savings badges, Zencastr's page requires JavaScript and rendered no prices, Camtasia's store rendered no prices, Hindenburg's pricing URL returned 404, Cleanvoice was unreachable, Filmora showed promotional yearly prices under a countdown, and CapCut's pricing URL returned 404. Adobe Podcast is free and not ranked. Submagic and Opus Clip are listed elsewhere as clip tools rather than editors.
Best for: Recording remote podcasts and interviews at local quality, then editing by transcript
The recording-first alternative. Local tracks per guest up to 4K, a transcript editor with AI clips and captions, and a live studio. Its pricing page on 14 September 2026 listed Pro at $29 a month or $24 billed $288 annually, Grow at $39 or $34 billed $408 annually, and Webinar at $99 or $79, with 14-day trials.
Free tier: Yes — two hours of separate-track recording.
Watch out: The editor is lighter than Descript for solo video and screen work, and the Webinar card showed an annual figure identical to Grow's, which needs confirming.
Best for: Teams subtitling, translating and repurposing video in the browser
The browser team editor. A conventional timeline with the best subtitle and translation tools in this list, priced per member. Its pricing page on 14 September 2026 listed Pro at $16 a member a month billed annually ($192 a year) or $24 monthly, and Business at $50 billed annually ($600 a year) or $64 monthly.
Free tier: Yes — 10 credits with watermarked exports.
Watch out: No transcript-based audio editing, and AI features draw down credits.
Best for: Browser editing with AI avatars, subtitles and translation
The all-purpose browser editor. Subtitles, translation, avatars and screen recording in one tab. Its pricing page renders client-side; read through a rendering fetch on 14 September 2026, it showed three paid tiers at $12, $22 and $39 per user a month billed yearly, whose names did not render.
Free tier: Yes — 720p with a watermark.
Watch out: Monthly-billing rates were not readable, and the tier names did not render, so confirm which plan you are buying on veed.io.
Best for: Beginners who want recording, cleanup, editing and hosting in one bill
The podcast maker. Automatic levelling and noise cleanup, text-based editing, AI show notes and podcast hosting included. Its pricing page on 14 September 2026 listed one plan at $38 a month, or $32 a month billed annually with two months free.
Free tier: No — a 7-day free trial and a 30-day guarantee.
Watch out: Audio only, no free plan, and less control than Descript when you want to edit by hand.
Best for: Producing ads, narrated podcasts and voiced video from a script
The generative studio. AI voices, music, images and avatars produce a finished piece from text rather than editing a recording. Its pricing page on 14 September 2026 listed Creator at $25 a month or $21 billed yearly with commercial rights, and Pro at $45 a month on yearly billing with API access.
Free tier: Yes — 150 credits.
Watch out: It is not an editor for recorded audio; credits are abstract and Pro's monthly rate was not readable.
Best for: Turning raw screen recordings into polished product videos and docs
The demo specialist. Record a walkthrough and get a studio-style video with AI voiceover, zooms and translation, plus a written article. Its pricing page on 14 September 2026 listed Solo at $40 a month billed yearly and Business at $120 billed yearly. It ranks for "descript alternatives" with its own comparison page.
Free tier: Yes — 10 minutes of video exports a month.
Watch out: Three hours of exports a year on Solo is small, and monthly rates were not readable.
Best for: Automatic cleanup and loudness mastering without opening an editor
The post-production robot. Levelling, noise reduction, loudness targets, transcripts and chapters applied automatically and priced by the hour.
